Hello. My name is Gabrielle Hatty and I love to sew! I have recently launched my new business – Hattgriff Handmade. It has been an interested journey coming to this time in my life, and it’s truly something I had never expected!
My obsession with sewing began with the therapeutic need to create something beautiful following my magnificent Dad's sudden passing. A friend suggested I make a memory quilt using fabric from my Dad’s shirts. It wasn’t easy, in reality it took me over a week to recover from having to cut up the first shirt but in the end I was determined. Not only did I finish one quilt, I managed to complete six. One for each of my sisters, my Mother and my two sons. The fact that my boys now sleep under warm, delightfully heavy quilts that feature part of their Grandfather’s life, warms my heart.
From there I began sewing each and every day. Around the births and breastfeeding of my three young children, as my Husband and I completed our handmade house in the Yarra Valley.
Over time it has evolved, I love to sew handmade gifts for birthdays, Christmas and when new babies arrive. I have learned to sew clothing for my children and I love the fact that there is a new challenge and so many things I’ve never sewn before! I’ve discovered hand pieced hexies and my next quilt will feature these new and intricate shapes. It’s not fashionable but I love to hand sew whilst watching my children at play.
My two beautiful boys welcomed a lovely little sister nearly a year ago. It turns out little girls open up a whole new world, filled with frills, ruffles, pink and dolls. I wanted to make my baby girl her very first doll and it turned out so beautifully that I have recently taken the plunge and made my unique 'Hattgriff Handmade' dolls available to the public. I had doubts, it’s unlikely to be easy but I was supported by other mums in business who gave me some great advice. Just do it! And so I have.
Whilst my 'Little Lady' dolls feature pretty fabric and removable skirts, ironically it’s my 'Little Mate' dolls designed for boys which are the most popular! With superheroes and glow in the dark fabric, perhaps I should have expected that. Our dolls measure approximately 14” (35cms). They are the perfect size for little hands and for popping in your bag on outings. Their faces are hand drawn using non-toxic, fade-resistant washable inks. All dolls are individually handmade in my own smoke free, pet free home. Filled with new Australian made fill, our dolls are designed to be child and baby safe – although small children should always be supervised at play.
I delight in designing something new from the inspiration and requests of my clients. Being able to create and challenge myself whilst working from home and caring for my three children is truly brilliant. Whilst there is so much to do and I am constantly learning, it's hard to imagine my life without Hattgriff Handmade. I’m looking forward to this next chapter and I’d like to thank this brilliant community at Mums in Business for this wonderful opportunity. Women empowering women, such an amazing thing.
